Elizabeth Darby

F, #77987, b. 1771, d. January 1842
Her married name was Westlake. Elizabeth Darby was born in 1771 at Devon, England, Michael Flynn in his book 'The Second Fleet' has an entry forElizabeth Wood the daughter of Elizabeth Ann Wood :.

'Elizabeth Wood was the daughter of Elizabeth (q.v.), the wife of JohnWood, who was sentenced to seven years transportation at the September1789 Old Bailey Sessions and had sailed for the colony on the'Neptune'.
Elizabeth senior was discharged from from Newgate Prison and embarkedon the 'Neptune' transport on 11 September 1789. The first tracedrecord of her child Elizabeth appears when she was embarked with hermother on the 'Surprize' transport at Sydney Cove in August 1790. Theywere among 194 mostly female convicts and a few children sent toNorfolk Island on the ship, arriving a week later. It is possible thatElizabeth had been born since her mother had landed from the 'Neptune'five weeks before, but it seems more likely that she had been born onthe voyage or in England. When her mother and an accomplice had beenarrested in the shop they were accused of robbing they were carrying asmall child, which may well have been this Elizabeth. She appears tohave sailed for Hobart, VDL with her mother and family in 1808.'.

'Elizabeth Wood.
Elizabeth Wood was tried at the Old Bailey on September 9, 1789,convicted and sentenced to transportation for seven years.
She was charged with stealing a pair of silk stockings and a pair ofcotton stockings. Charged with her was Sarah Conjuit, who, thoughaccording to the report she was found guilty and similarly sentenced, does not appear to have been transported to NSW.
Elizabeth Wood was described as the wife of John Wood.
Sarah Conjuit had a child in her arms and it appears from the reportthat the child belonged to Elizabeth Wood, and was probably the youngElizabeth Wood who arrived in NSW with her mother.
The theft took place in the premises of Isaac Garner, who said inevidence that he lived at Shoreditch Turnpike. A directory of the timeshows Isaac Garner, Hosier of 78 Shoreditch. Elizabeth Wood said shehad gone to buy her husband some stockings, and had asked for amottled pair of stockings with clocks. Mrs Garner said she been askedfor ribbed cotton stockings, and when she had shown some they saidthey did not like the rib.
Sarah Conjuit said that the child picked up some silk stockings, andshe gave them back, but Mrs Garner had accused them of stealing them.A Constable was sent for, found som pawnbroker's duplicates for pawnedstockings upon them and they were charged.
A woman giving evidence of Sarah Conjuit's character said she hadknown her from a baby. 'Her parents are very honest, industrious goodpeople, and her poor mother lies almost dead in the yard now. She hasbeen a girl on the town, unfortunate, but nothing else.
Elizabeth Wood was tried by Mr Justice Wilson and a Middlesex jury.'.
She married John Westlake, son of Convict Edward Westlake and Elizabeth Mortimer, in 1794 at Crediton, Devonshire, England. Elizabeth Darby lived in 1841 at Crediton, Devonshire, England. She died in January 1842 at Crediton, Devonshire, England.
